Match the parts of speech on the left with their with the definitions on the right.

1.

Adjective

a. Sometimes called a "noun marker", sometimes classed as a determiner, these precede certain nouns.  A and an are considered indefinite forms of these and the is considered to be a definite form.
2.

Verb

b. These are words that describe nouns and pronouns.  They give us more information about them.
3. Pronoun c. The most simple of these substitute for nouns and noun phrases.  They are often classified as first, second or third person.
4.

Preposition

d. These are words that express action (run) or a state of being (love).  The action can also be abstract rather than visible, such the words think and decide.
5.

Adverb

e. These words are modifiers of verbs - and adjectives - and other adverbs.  They generally answer questions about when, where, how, in what manner, and to what extent or degree.
6.

Noun

f. This part of speech is used to express strong feeling or emotion, usually that occurs quickly.  Sometimes called exclamations, you'll notice they always come with an exclamation mark.
7.

Conjunction

g. This part of speech represents the name of a person, animal, place, thing, quality, action, or measurement.
8.

Article

h. These words denote relationships between certain words in a sentence.
They are placed before a noun (or the article/quantifier preceding
the noun) and help establish a relationship between that noun and another
noun—or between that noun and a verb.
9.

Interjection

  

i. In Latin this word means "join together" and that's what they do - they join individual and groups of words together.   The most common of these are and, or and but.
